5 Places in Malacca to Get Your Caffeine Fix

-

Malacca is often called the historical state of Malaysia. There’s a rich heritage of Baba Nyonya Peranakans and along with its diverse colonial history of being under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British during different periods in time, the intermarriages of culture runs deep in this sleepy colonial town.

In recent times, the city of Malacca is awashed with a buzzing cafe scene that is seeing a large number of cafe hoppers flocking to. The cafes in Singapore can easily burn a hole in your wallet, and the ones in Johor Bahru are all too frequented, if you’re looking for your next cafe fix, the historical city of Malacca may just do the trick for you.

1. The Daily Fix

The Daily Fix has often been called a “hidden gem”, but truth be told, with the many publications that have raved about it, I’m not so sure it’s hidden any longer.

That said, despite the wide coverage it gets, it would be a crime to leave it off any list of cafes in Malacca. Snuggled behind a souvenir shop, you’ll be greeted with a charming vintage-looking space that endears itself to all its visitors.

The Daily Fix is famed for their pancakes and one of the absolute must-get is their Local Pandan Pancake which is stuffed with gula melaka. The pancakes are sweet and delicious on its own, though if you can’t get enough of that gula melaka, it’s offered on the side as well. It’s time to get your cafe fix at The Daily Fix.

The interior of Calanthe Art Cafe is as its name suggests, artsy, vibrant, and funky. From antique ornaments to uniquely designed walls, the cafe is welcoming and has an overall fun vibe.

But what sets Calanthe Art Cafe cleanly apart is, first, its offering of specialty coffee drinks that are said to be from the different 13 states of Malaysia. Each cup is said to represent the signature taste and state from which it hails.

On top of that, Calanthe’s interpretation and rendition of local favourites such as the Nyonya Laksa is proven to be a hit amongst its regular patrons. With such adherence to local culture and cuisine, Calanthe Art Cafe presents an excellent blend of modernity and tradition.

4. Kaya Kaya Cafe

At Kaya Kaya Cafe, tradition and culture is valued greatly. The word “kaya” here translates to rich or wealthy and not to the coconut spread so many love. To the cafe specifically, it refers to the richness that can found in food, life, relationship, health, and wealth.

Like many cafes in Malacca, Kaya Kaya adopts antique furniture and red brick walls to exude a vintage vibe and to call back a bygone era. Sitting in the cafe gives one a sort of calm feeling, as if time flows slower in this space, making it a perfect spot for a lazy afternoon.

Where are all my health conscious folks at? Eating clean seems to be all the rave nowadays (though going all out when it comes to food is the only way I roll). Only using organic, all natural produce in the menu, you’ll be sure to be treated to healthy baked goods, mains, and a mouth-watering selection of desserts.

The outdoor setting is quaint and lovely as well, enough to get us to drop by anytime we’re in the area. If you’re ever around Jalan Hang Lekiu, stop by Eat at 18 for a healthy brunch and get yourself a perfect #OOTD while you’re at it.
