SPAIN, Barcelona – Nestled in the heart of central Passeig de Gracia is a city icon of Barcelona like no other. Touting a million visitors every year, Casa Batlló has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
Purchased by Mr Josep Batlló y Casanovas in 1903, the iconic silhouette of Casa Batlló you associate with today was actually designed in 1904 by the famous Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí. True to his artistic stroke and influences, Casa Batlló is often regarded as one of Gaudí’s modernism masterpieces.
Today, Casa Batlló is an architectural institution of Barcelona, and a city emblem. The building is edgy and along with its decorative glass and bright-coloured ceramics, the cast iron and painted ivory balconies are as iconic as the facade itself. With the Casa Batlló, gone are the straight lines and ordered structures, epitomising Catalan modernism that has swept the region.
No journey to Barcelona is complete without taking in this iconic building, especially during Christmas where the entire building is lit up in a magical blue.
