JAPAN, Kyoto – A snow-capped Kinkaku-ji temple is truly a rare and beautiful sight. Originally built as a retirement villa for shogun Ashigaka Yoshimitsu, it became a Buddhist temple instead in 1408, in accordance with his dying wish.

An impressive structure with the top floors completely covered in gold leaf, this famed Zen Buddhism Temple is one of Kyoto’s top sights, attracting droves of people all throughout the year. It is just as well that access to the temple is prohibited, preserving its splendour for all to admire from afar.
