CHINA, Guizhou – Hidden amongst the clouds in the southwestern province of Guizhou is Fanjingshan or Mount Fanjing. Long considered a sacred site in China, two Buddhist temples that are perched at the peak of the mountain have huge significance in Chinese Buddhism. It starts with the belief that Fanjingshan was the bodhimanda of the Maitreya Buddha, which relates to the location where the Buddha gained enlightenment. As such, the Temple of the Buddha and the Temple of Maitreya sits atop New Golden Peak on Fanjingshan. A formidable 8,000 steps bar the way to the peak, where both temples perch. From the top, you’ll get a bird’s eye, over-the-clouds view of the Wulin mountain range that we must say, is breathtaking.
